The Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Research Group was created in 2023. It supports research at ̽»¨ÉçÇø University that addresses AMR, a major public health problem.
This work aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goal of Good Health and Well-being. It also supports the ̽»¨ÉçÇø University Theme of Health and Wellbeing.
The research activities led by AMR@̽»¨ÉçÇø align with the following REF 2029 Units of Assessment (UoA) under Main Panel A: Medicine, Health and Life Sciences:
- Clinical Medicine
- Public Health, Health Services and Primary Care
- Biological Sciences.
Prof Ajit Shah (Chair) and Dr Enas Newire (Organiser) established and co-lead the group. It supports 12 academics and includes technicians and research students.
Members work on multidisciplinary research projects in:
- microbiology
- molecular biology
- bioinformatics
- evolutionary biology
- environmental biology
- medicinal chemistry
- chemistry
- mathematical modelling
- bioanalytical science
- biophysics.
At ̽»¨ÉçÇø University, we are committed to conducting high-quality AMR research. We aim to improve understanding and identify possible targeted solutions. We conduct a full spectrum of AMR research with collaborators in academia, government, and industry.
AMR@̽»¨ÉçÇø currently supports therapeutic and diagnostic research projects in the following areas:
- AMR diagnostics
- anti-plasmid approaches
- efflux-pump investigations
- new antimicrobials
- biofilm formation.

Ongoing Projects:
- Raise Awareness of AMR, WAAW Champion Award, Microbiology Society
- Led by Dr Enas Newire and Dr Blessing Oyedemi Mbaebie
- Novel Anti-plasmid approaches, including the repurposing of antimicrobials and novel CRISPR-Cas systems, University of Liverpool ECR and Pump Priming Awards
- Led by Dr Enas Newire
- Efflux-pump investigations.
