Course overview

Course Overview

This module provides a comprehensive overview of implantable cardiac rhythm management. It covers pacemakers (PPM), implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD), and cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) devices.

Students will examine the clinical rationale for implantation, procedural techniques, and device hardware. This includes battery and lead technologies.

Key areas of study include ECG and intracardiac electrogram (EGM) interpretation, advanced device programming, timing cycles, sensing algorithms, and therapeutic functions.

Students will learn to evaluate device interrogation data. They will identify and resolve problems such as lead failure, battery depletion, and inappropriate therapies. They will also learn to manage device advisories.

The module introduces radiographic techniques for identifying lead positions and anatomical landmarks. It also covers radiation safety.

Students will explore the growing role of remote monitoring in long-term device management. The module will give them the theoretical and applied knowledge needed for safe and effective rhythm management in modern clinical practice.

 

About your course

Teaching

This campus-based module combines interactive lectures, practitioner-led sessions, and hands-on workshops. Students will use clinical case studies and digital learning tools to apply core concepts and develop diagnostic skills.

They will also build confidence in device selection, programming, and troubleshooting within cardiac rhythm management.

Assessment

Assessment is entirely coursework-based. Students will complete two summative assessments based on case studies and device data, including EGMs. They will interpret the information and recommend appropriate clinical management.

Weekly formative, case-based discussions will support skill development and critical thinking. These discussions will help students prepare for the applied, scenario-based assessments.
